Electronic music is that type of music that uses electronic musical instruments and electronic musical technology for its production and interpretation. In general, one can distinguish between the sound produced by the use of electromechanical means of that produced by electronic technology, which can also be mixed. Some examples of electro-mechanically sound producing devices are the telarmonium, the Hammond organ and the electric guitar. The production of purely electronic sounds can be achieved by devices such as the theremin, the sound synthesizer and the computer.
Electronic music was associated in its day exclusively with a form of western cult music, but since the end of the 1960s, the availability of musical technology at affordable prices led to music produced by electronic means becoming increasingly popular. At present, electronic music presents a great variety of technique and composition, ranging from forms of experimental cultured music to popular forms such as electronic dance music.
